Up close and personal
Having one of the most evocative and recognizable voices in American music, Aaron Neville is an international ambassador of New Orleans R&B, though his soaring falsetto sounds at home in many styles. This is an intimate duo show that we feel very fortunate to bring back to Bull Run. To hear Aaron’s voice in such a pure format, in our intimate room is amazing.
During his career, which stretches across more than 50 years, Aaron has been nominated for 12 Grammy's awards. His nominations have come in the soul, gospel, jazz, country/western, R&B and pop categories. He’s a four-time winner. In 1993, Rolling Stone Magazine's Critics' Poll named him the “best male singer in the world.”
Coming of age in the incredibly creative 1950s Crescent City R&B scene, Neville gained national attention with the Wild Tchoupitoulas, a touring Mardi Gras celebration that led to the creation of the Neville Brothers band - an institution in itself that would confirm Neville's iconic status. Over his amazing career, Aaron has scored a string of hits starting with 1966's #1 hit "Tell It Like It Is," which held the Number One spot on the R&B charts for five weeks. He went on to win Grammy Awards for his triple-platinum 1989 collaboration with Linda Ronstadt "Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind" and reached the Country charts with the title track of 1993’s "The Grand Tour."
A member of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, his 2010 project was the gospel album "I Know I’ve Been Changed," celebrating his 50th year in recorded music. His 2016 album, “Apache,” makes the case for Aaron as the most holistic of soul men. Its hard R&B side matches anything the Neville Brothers ever recorded for true grit, while still allowing plenty of space for a singer who’s arguably the most distinctive vocal stylist on the planet to “tell it like it is.” This record touches on the mystic gumbo of “Yellow Moon” and the sheer sweetness of “Everybody Plays the Fool” while diverging toward a third path we’ve never quite heard from Neville in the studio. And as much as he wants to surprise long-time fans with it, he says he’s “hoping that a lot of other people that might not even know me get turned on to it.”
