Ann Hampton Callaway: Jazz Goes to the Movies

8-19-2018

Tony Award nominee Ann Hampton Callaway salutes songs made famous in films in - Jazz Goes to the Movies

Considered one of the best jazz singers of our time, she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical in Swing! and a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Broadway Debut. Musical Theatre Review recently said “Great is one of the most over-used words in the dictionary but just as Ella Fitzgerald was the greatest jazz singer of her era, so too is the magnificent Ann Hampton Callaway of hers.”

Also an accomplished writer Ann has written seven songs for recent Barbara Streisand records and her “Streisand Songbook” show is a hit with PAC’s, festivals and symphonies. "The Streisand Songbook" won two Broadwayworld.com Awards and the MACShow of the Year Award. Ann went on to perform over 100 symphony dates of the show. She has had nine records on the Billboard Jazz Charts.

This show, explores the fascinating ways jazz and film have come together to tell stories. The playlist includes “Taking a Chance on Love” from Vernon Duke’s Cabin in the Sky, “Let’s Face the Music and Dance” from Irving Berlin’s Follow the Fleet, “This Time the Dream’s on Me,” from Harold Arlen’s Blues in the Night, and “As Time Goes By,” the Herman Hupfeld classic from Casablanca.

Callaway also performs jazz songs she has recorded for films, including “Come Rain or Come Shine” from The Good Shepherd, starring Robert DeNiro, “The Nearness of You” from Last Holiday starring QueenLatifah, and “Pourquoi,” a song she wrote for the new film Blind, starring Alec Baldwin and Demi Moore.

"Jazz Goes to the Movies" is mainly a celebration of the golden age of songwriters from the 30's and 40's who wrote love songs for the silver screen that gave people dreams when they needed them most. It’s a perfect time to celebrate…dreams and a sense of hope.

“For sheer vocal beauty, no contemporary singer matches Ms. Callaway.” - Stephen Holden, New York Times

“Callaway is one of the best equipped jazz vocalists swinging today.” – Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

“Astonishing.” – LA Weekly

“…superbly intelligent, singularly creative pop-jazz stylist who can stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Streisand, Ronstadt, Shirley Horn and Dianne Reeves…” – Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes
